Newly released campus crime statistics showed a decline in on-campus assaults at The Ohio State University.
According to the report, Ohio State, one of the largest campuses in the U.S., has had a steady three-year decline in areas such as drug and alcohol arrests, 10TV's Jeff Hogan reported.
Forcible sex offenses also dropped, from 32 assaults in 2008 to 20 assaults in 2009 to 12 assaults in 2010.
Crime at Ohio University, the oldest college in the state, has increased, Hogan reported.
According to the report, Ohio University reported nine sexual assaults in 2009 and 15 in 2010.
"Most of our crimes are crimes of opportunity." said Ohio University Police Chief Andrew Powers. "If we can help educate people on ways they can reduce their chances of becoming a victim, that will be far more effective than increasing patrols or putting more cops on the street."
Police on both campuses said crime trends fluctuate and remains a community focus on and off campus, Hogan reported.
