Columbus Man Admits To Fatal Shooting From 1991

A Columbus cold case has been solved, and a man has already been sentenced.

A Columbus man on Monday entered a guilty plea to a 24-year-old murder case.

Anthony Monzell Taylor, 43, pleaded guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter in the death of Jerry Watts.

Watts, 39, was shot and killed in August 27, 1991.

At the time, three men were seen roaming around the 3800 block of Briggs Road. They were knocking on the back door of one home, trying to open the window of another. Watts was shot and killed when he came to his own door.

In 2014, the Columbus Police Latent Fingerprint Unit matched fingerprints from a neighbor's window sill to Taylor.

Watts’ family shared some of their memories with 10TV.

“My dad took us camping every weekend, fishing, we had great times together,” said Tammy Hammond, Jerry Watts’ daughter. “It is hard. It has been hard through all these years.”

Watts’ son Michael said he thought there would never be an arrest in the case.

Taylor was immediately sentenced to 10-25 years in prison for the murder.

The family says they're pleased their questions about the shooter have been answered, but there are two others involved who need to answer for their crimes.

"I don't think we're going to stop until those two are behind bars either,” added Michael.
