A west side neighborhood is making its streets safer, and taking initiative to report crime.
The West Side Block Watch team was formed more than two years ago, 10TV's Ashleigh Barry reported. Whenever they can find time, they put on their reflective vests, arms themselves with walkie-talkies and flashlights, and search out crime.
"This isn't a group of vigilantes, but rather a group of peacekeepers in pursuit of a safer neighborhood," Barry reported.
"We're tired of our property being stolen and taken right off our front porches," West Side Block Watch Capt. Eric Keener said. "We've had members that have caught people in the act, breaking into two garages. And we've had arrests out of that because our members were out checking the neighborhood."
The block watch does not confront the criminals, but they do report the crimes, Barry reported.
Police also encouraged all residents to safely report anything suspicious in their neighborhoods.
The West Side Block Watch raises money for the DARE program, after-school programs and families in need.
