Police arrest suspect caught on camera assaulting man during robbery at downtown Columbus bus stop

The incident happened at the COTA bus stop on South High and East Broad streets.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police arrested a suspect accused of robbing a man and punching him multiple times at a bus stop downtown last month.

On Nov. 30, a man was waiting on a COTA bus in the area of South High and East Broad streets when he was approached by the suspect, who police identified as 38-year-old James Gunter.

Records from the Franklin County Municipal Court state that Gunter attempted to take the man’s leather bag that he was carrying.

Police said when the man refused, Gunter assaulted him.

Security footage captured Gunter shoving the man to the ground and onto the street. He is then seen punching the man multiple times before getting up and walking away.

Court records say on Wednesday, just before 3:45 p.m., police were notified when Gunter attempted to get treatment on his injured hand at Grant Medical Center.

After he was treated, Gunter was taken to police headquarters for questioning. While being interviewed, Gunter admitted to being involved in the incident and was wearing the same clothes during the assault and robbery.

Gunter is charged with robbery. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.
