COLUMBUS, Ohio — A Franklin County judge set a $1 million bond for the 19-year-old suspect charged for allegedly shooting and killing a man during a fight at a Waffle House near Ohio State campus.
Jaquan Curry appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court Friday morning to be arraigned for a murder charge. The arraignment comes a day after he was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Canal Winchester and more than three months since the deadly shooting.
Curry is accused of fatally shooting 38-year-old Ronald Diggs on April 29. A fight started inside the restaurant on North High Street and it continued outside.
Court records state that Curry pulled out a handgun and shot Diggs in the chest.
An attorney representing the Ronald Diggs estate read a statement from the mother in court. The statement said that Curry didn't deserve bail because he "took my son away from a family."
When asked if he had any final questions, Curry apologized in court before his arraignment was over.
"I just want to say I apologize," he said.
His next court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 13.
