Police arrest suspect for 2006 shooting that left Columbus man bound to wheelchair until he died

DeShawne Stewart was indicted on two counts of murder.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A suspect was arrested for a shooting nearly 20 years ago that left a man bound to a wheelchair until he died last year.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, DeShawne Stewart shot Wendell Davis on July 8, 2006, in the 1000 block of South James Road. Davis was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of his life until he died on May 19, 2023. 

Police say the Franklin County Coroner's Office ruled his death a homicide.

Stewart was indicted by a grand jury on two counts of murder two weeks ago.

The Columbus Police SWAT team arrested Stewart on the city's east side on Monday.
