Columbus police: 43-year-old man killed by impaired driver in hit-and-run crash

The Accident Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 43-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run crash in east Columbus Monday night.

According to the Columbus Division of Police, a 2004 Chevrolet Impala broke down in the southbound lanes of Stelzer Road, south of East 5th Avenue, around 10 p.m.

A passenger in the Impala, identified by police as David Ford, got out of the car and he was standing near the driver-side door. The driver of the Impala was standing on the concrete median.

Around 10:36, police say a 2015 Chevrolet Silverado was traveling southbound on Stelzer Road and struck the back of the Impala.

Police identified the driver of the truck as Jamico Florida in a preliminary investigation report.
The impact of the crash caused the Impala to hit Ford, who was taken to Grant Medical Center where he later died.

Police said Florida ran away from the crash and officers located him on Allegheny Avenue.

The preliminary report says Florida was found to be driving the truck while he was impaired and he has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide.

The Accident Investigation Unit is continuing to investigate the crash.
