COLUMBUS, Ohio — A man suspected of shooting and killing two security guards at a downtown Columbus nightclub in June appeared in Franklin County Municipal Court on Friday.
Jaquez Hoover, 26, was given a $5 million bond for two counts of murder and a $200,000 bond for a domestic violence charge.
On June 14, officers were called to Aura nightclub, formerly known as Avalon, on North 5th Street for a reported shooting and found four people shot. Two of them, 27-year-old Desmond Taylor and 36-year-old Ceilin Smith, died from gunshot wounds, according to the Columbus Division of Police. Both Smith and Taylor were working as security guards. The other two victims survived.
Hoover was identified as a suspect after investigators reviewed the surveillance video. He was arrested in southeast Columbus by U.S. Marshals on Thursday.
Smith's oldest daughter Calynn said in court that there's no reason her father couldn't go home safely and that Hoover needs to own up to his actions.
"It's a relief to not only my family but the other families who were in fear for their lives and everyone else. So we're grateful that they finally got him and we hope that he does get punished his punishment. We need justice for all four," she said.
Hoover is scheduled for another court appearance on Sept. 9.
