City shuts down Hilltop property for multiple calls of gunshots, drug activity

According to a release from City Attorney Zach Klein, the city obtained a preliminary injunction to shut down the house, located at 673 S. Richardson Ave.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The City of Columbus boarded up a house in the Hilltop neighborhood where police have been called multiple times in the past two years for drug activity and gunshots.

According to a release from City Attorney Zach Klein, the city obtained a preliminary injunction to shut down the house, located at 673 S. Richardson Ave.

Court documents say the Columbus Division of Police first received a call to the property in February 2021. Since then, police have been called to the property at least 40 times.

In February 2023, police received a complaint of 10 gun shots at the house. A month later, police received another complaint of five shots heard at the house.

In April 2023, police went to the house for a death from a possible drug overdose.

Four months later, Columbus police detectives made several controlled purchases of crack cocaine at the house.

Police also received a theft report at the house with the caller reporting that $12,000 worth of items were missing from the house.

“Hilltop residents deserve a neighborhood free from drugs and violence, a safe place they can call home, start a business or raise a family. By shutting this drug house down, we’re disrupting the flow of narcotics into our streets and making the Hilltop safer for residents.

Klein added that he encourages people who see something to say something and contact 311 or law enforcement about any nuisance properties.
