Authorities arrest suspect in theft of $500,000 worth of coins from elderly Columbus man

Police said charges are pending for multiple suspects.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Authorities arrested a man believed to be involved in the theft of a rare coin collection from a Columbus man.

According to the Grandview Division of Police, a burglary occurred at a Marble Cliff home on Dec. 22. Police said about $500,000 worth of coins were taken from an elderly man.

Detectives believe the suspects were familiar with the residence and the location of the coins because there was very little disturbed in the home.

Police identified 50-year-old Jason Skaggs as a possible suspect. Detectives believe there are at least two more suspects.

On Dec. 29, Skaggs was pulled over by authorities with the Belmont County Sheriff's Office for traffic-related offenses. Skaggs and his wife were arrested for narcotic and weapon violations, according to police. It's unclear if his wife was involved in the alleged coin theft.

Authorities searched the vehicle and found a large amount of rare coins. The sheriff's office contacted Grandview police after learning about learning about the burglary investigation.

Grandview detectives recovered the rare coins found in Skaggs' car and believe they do belong to the victim, police said.

The recovered coins are believed to have a value of more than $150,000. Police believe there are still coins missing or they have already been sold to someone else.

Police said charges are pending for multiple suspects.
