GLOUSTER, Ohio — A man and a woman are dead after an apparent murder-suicide in Athens County Monday afternoon, the sheriff's office said.
According to the Athens County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a home in Glouster around 2 p.m. Upon arrival, deputies and detectives searched the home and found two people dead in an upstairs bedroom.
The two individuals were identified as Amy Smathers, 54, and Jack Smathers, 59.
After processing the scene, detectives concluded that the married couple was in the process of filing for divorce and that a domestic violence incident had likely taken place.
The sheriff's office said that evidence shows that Jack died of an apparent suicide by drug overdose. Amy's injuries are undetermined at this time, but her death is being investigated as a homicide with her husband as the only suspect.
Detectives found no evidence that any other person was involved in the incident.
The case remains active pending the autopsy and toxicology reports.
