COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police is searching for a suspect who robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint on Tuesday.
The mail carrier was parked at South 5th and East Engler streets in downtown Columbus around 3 p.m. when a man walked up to him as he was unloading a mail drop box.
According to a police report, the suspect put a 9 mm handgun to the mail carrier's stomach and demanded his keys to the mailbox. The suspect took the keys, got into a silver sedan and drove away. Another person was in the vehicle, according to the report.
The mail carrier was not injured. Postal inspectors are assisting police in the investigation.
"Our office currently has an active investigation that is ongoing. We are working with our local law enforcement partners to follow up any and all leads,” said a spokesperson for the US Postal Inspection Service.
This incident is at least the sixth time since November a mail carrier has been robbed, two of which happened on Jan. 3.
The US Postal Inspection Service said the agency is working to improve the physical security of mail collection boxes, working closely with law enforcement and other measures.
