COLUMBUS, Ohio — A 17-year-old boy accused of shooting and killing another teen had a hearing in Franklin County Juvenile Court on Tuesday.
The suspect, who 10TV is not naming because of his age, is charged with murder in the death of 19-year-old Gene Sutton.
On Nov. 3, officers were called to the 1400 block of Demorest Road, just south of Clime Road, on a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Sutton suffering from a gunshot wound. Medics took Sutton to Grant Medical Center where he later died.
Surveillance pictures released by Columbus police show Sutton meeting with at least two other people in the parking lot of a strip mall on Demorest Road when one of the suspects shot and killed Sutton.
Police say the two suspects joined a third man and got into a Ford truck and crashed it near an apartment complex.
Columbus SWAT officers arrested the teen.
“He has let me know he is not guilty of this offense, and that is all I can say at this time,” said defense attorney Joe Landusky.
Of the 104 homicide victims in the city, 34 of them are 21 and younger. Fifty homicide suspects are also 21 and younger.
Columbus police are still searching for two other suspects in Sutton's homicide.
“He's denying any involvement, so he wouldn't know who was involved,” Landusky explained.
The magistrate ordered the teen to be held in the Franklin County Juvenile Intervention Center until his hearing next week.
