17-year-old boy dies after shooting in South Linden; 2 teens arrested

The boy, identified as Dezmond Vaughn-Butler, was found suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Grant Medical Center and died on Wednesday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Two teenagers fatally shot a 17-year-old boy in an alley in the South Linden neighborhood on Tuesday, according to Franklin County Municipal Court records.

Police said the shooting happened in the 1600 block of Cleveland Avenue around 9:30 p.m.
The boy, identified as Dezmond Vaughn-Butler, was found suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to Grant Medical Center and died on Wednesday, according to police.

Court records say after the shooting happened, a witness told investigators that Vaughn-Butler was in an alley behind a residence when he encountered a 16-year-old boy.

A verbal altercation took place and the 16-year-old shot Vaughn-Butler in the head with a semi-automatic "assault style" rifle, according to court documents. The witness identified the 16-year-old as the shooter.

Later in the investigation, surveillance video showed 18-year-old Dante Johnston also shooting Vaughn-Butler, court records say.

The surveillance video corroborates with what witnesses told investigators, according to court documents.

The 16-year-old is due in court on Nov. 7. Johnston is due in court on Nov. 9 and is being held on a $500,000 bond.

"The most important part of all of it is that we really have to come up with a solution in getting this job done. We're going on year four really on the gun violence, it hasn't moved or anything of that nature, so we really have to come with some type of solution that involves everyone in some type of way,” said Founder and CEO of Linden Community Stop the Violence Derrick Russell.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting is asked to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
