Shootings up in Columbus compared to record-breaking homicide year of 2017

The city of Columbus' most recent homicide was part of a shootout outside an apartment complex on Monday.

The city of Columbus' most recent homicide was part of a shootout outside an apartment complex on Monday.

It's just the latest example of violence in the city.

“Two months ago I experienced my house being shot up. They stood in front of my house and they shot my house up,” Joyce said.

Bulletholes leave a scary reminder on Joyce's house. In May, someone drove up and shot about 90 times.

Monday night, the same thing happened to her neighbor.

“My nerves right now are shot. It brought back so many memories of us getting on the ground. [I] don't know what to do because you don't know if they have stopped or start back,” she said.

Around the same time, someone shot up a house on Taylor Avenue, hitting a 13-year-old who was inside his bedroom.

“I was scared to death one of them was going to get hurt. He's hurt, he's hurt bad, but it could have been a lot worse,” Carol Cackovic said.

Cackovic's house was also shot up two weeks ago.

“Just recently it's gotten really bad and it's got to get stopped,” Cackovic said.

A man was shot and killed in broad daylight in the Sharon Woods neighborhood Monday afternoon.

“I'm very concerned. It's not just for my neighborhood. It's for the city,” said Pat Wood, President of the Sharon Woods Civic Association.

So far in June and July this year, there were 323 felonious assaults, most of those involved shootings. Last year at the same time, there were 156.

If you compare it to 2017 where Columbus set a record for homicides, there were 193 felonious assaults in the two-month span.

“It just needs to stop,” Cackovic said.

“Just get them. I want them found,” Joyce pleaded.

Police need your help in all of these cases. So far they haven't made any arrests in the shootings in the last 24 hours.
