Columbus police investigating multiple weekend shootings

From Friday morning to Sunday, three people lost their lives, and nine more were injured.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Columbus Division of Police is investigating multiple shootings that happened across the city this past weekend.

From Friday morning to Sunday, three people lost their lives, and nine more were injured.

In one of the seven shootings, police said a 14-year-old shot a woman after she ran over a dog in the University District on Sunday. The woman was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but she is expected to recover from her injuries. A 16-year-old juvenile was arrested and charged with three counts of felonious assault.

In another shooting, a man and a woman died after being shot in the South Franklinton neighborhood early Saturday morning. No arrests have been made.

So far this year, there have been 28 homicides in Columbus, which is seven more than in 2022. After the half-dozen shootings this weekend, Columbus police said they are looking at moving resources.

“The fact that we had those numbers give us a little bit of pause and concern, however, it is one of those situations where we will continue to show up and do our jobs,” said Columbus Police Commander Mark Denner.

“It hurts to hear someone lost a loved one,” said Ralph Carter, the founder of We Are Linden.

Carter said in order to reduce the violence, it will take the whole community.
“We can't blame law enforcement or city officials for something that is involved in our community. Our kids, our family members,” Carter said.

Columbus police have solved 68% of the homicides that have happened this year.
