COLUMBUS, Ohio — Stonewall Columbus will be honored with an Ohio Historical Marker for its efforts in uplifting the LGBTQ+ community in the Columbus area.
The state recognized the nonprofit organization for honoring its history and ongoing contributions to the community and the broader LGBTQ+ movement.
“The Ohio Historical Marker is a significant acknowledgment of our community’s resilience and the pivotal role that Stonewall Columbus has played in the LGBTQ+ rights movement across Ohio. It is a reminder that our work continues to be crucial and impactful,“ Board President K. Terry Smith said.
The historical marker celebrates the founding of Stonewall Union in 1981 and its role in advocating for the LGBTQ+ community. It also details the organization’s early efforts in organizing Columbus’ first Pride march and contributing to legislative reform.
“This historical marker is not just a recognition of Stonewall Columbus’ past but a light for the future. It serves as a testament to the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community here in Central Ohio and reflects our communities’ ongoing commitment to advocacy, education and support for all of our members,” Stonewall Columbus Executive Director Densil Porteous said.
Stonewall Columbus will host a dedication ceremony for the historical marker sometime in 2025.
Stonewall Columbus is one of four LGBTQ+ Ohio Historical Markers in the state. The others to have received one are Natalie Clifford Barney in Dayton, the LGBTQ+ Civil Rights Movement in Cleveland and Summit Station in Columbus.
