COLUMBUS, Ohio — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a day when the community pauses and reflects on the life and legacy of Dr. King.
“Don’t use this day as just a relaxing day. I use this day to go out in my community, go out and help others in need” said Mackenzie Lewis, a junior at Columbus Afrocentric Early College High School.
Lewis is one of the students in the Columbus City Schools district who were selected to speak at the annual MLK breakfast at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.
Students who were selected to speak are presenting on a variety of topics, which range from talking about the Black experience to how we can move forward as a society with Dr. King’s message in mind.
“I hope they would take away preserving his legacy and be able to sustain the dream that Dr. King had” said Joshua Goshay, another CCS student speaking at the breakfast.
The students who are presenting hope that those who do not feel as connected to Dr. King use this day to give back or reflect on how they can help keep Dr. King’s mission alive in our changing society.
“Everybody has something they can do to contribute. Whether it’s just donating, whether it’s volunteering, whether it’s helping to coordinate an event like the Martin Luther King Breakfast” said CCS student presenter, Hafsa Musa.
Wake Up CBUS anchor Tracy Townsend emceed the event.
