The Wonder Bread bakery located just north of downtown on North Fourth Street willshut down operations this spring, 10TV News reported on Tuesday.
The media relations firm representing Kansas City-based Interstate Bakeries Corporation -- theparent company of Wonder Bread -- said in a release that the bakery would cease production by May9.
The company will also close a bakery in Missouri.
The news release said that 232 people are employed at the two locations. The release did notspecify how many jobs would be lost in Columbus.
However, last month, about 40 jobs were cut at the bakery because it was not equipped to make anew, all-natural bread line. After the cuts about 70 jobs remained at the bakery, the companysaid.
IBC said that local developments, including the decline of bread purchases, prompted the latestround of closures.
"While closing bakeries is always a difficult decision to make, it's important that we continueto shape our business to meet the demands of the marketplace. We deeply regret the impact thisdecision will have on our talented employees and their families," said IBC Chief Executive OfficerCraig Jung.
The release said that customers would still receive IBC products from bakeries in otherlocations.
