Body Of Second Buckeye Lake Boater Located

A search resumed on Monday for a second boater presumed drowned in a central Ohio lake after a fishing boat capsized.

The body of the second victim of a Buckeye Lake boat accident was located on Monday.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources had been searching since Friday for the man who was lost in Buckeye Lake when his 16-foot aluminum boat capsized.

Family members identified the man as Jason Lewis.

The other boater — whose body was recovered Friday — has been identified as 62-year-old Gary Cook of Columbus.

Officials said the water was about three feet deep where the boat capsized near Millersport, but only about 43 degrees.

One witness told 10TV he saw the boat go down, but there was nothing anyone could do.

“We saw the boat with two guys in it. I said ‘Man, it looks like it’s awful low in the water,” said Andrew Hannah.

Hannah says the men may have had motor trouble. He adds that the weather was brutal on the lake on Friday with estimated winds of more than 30 miles per hour.

Even though the lake is just four to six feet deep, investigators say the water temperature would quickly be fatal.

“You've got very cold water and hypothermia sets in very quickly", says Andrew Hollenback, Region Manager Division of Watercraft for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. "Your extremities shut down, your arms shut down, your feet and your legs - that makes holding on to stuff or swimming a lot more difficult.”
