Bars Prepare For Start Of Keno Game

Owners of bars and restaurants with the state lottery's Keno machines are expected to gain an additional $13,000 a year from their share of the ticket sales.

Thousands of Keno gambling machines will begin operating in bars and restaurants across Ohio nextweek.

The new Ohio Lottery game starts Monday amid hopes for increased revenue both by the state andby bar and restaurant owners, 10TV's Cara Connelly reported.

"There's definitely a lot of interest in the game and a lot of people asking about it," saidSarah Griffith, manager of the Jimmy V's bar in German Village, which has installed a Kenomachine.

Players choose 10 out of 80 numbers in drawings held every four minutes. A $1 ticket brings thepossibility of winning $300,000.

Host businesses will receive 6.2 percent of Keno ticket sales, which are expected to resultin an additional $13,000 a year on average for bar and restaurant owners with the game.

The introduction of Keno has been controversial since Gov. Ted Strickland announced it as a wayto increase state revenue by more than $70 million.

Monday's start of the game will be the largest expansion of the state lottery since Ohiojoined the multistate Mega Millions game in 2001.
