5 Dead, 1 Injured In Crash Along I-70 Near Zanesville

The State Highway Patrol has identified the five family members who were killed when their car collided head-on with van along Interstate 70.

Five people were killed in a crash on Wednesday afternoon while traveling along Interstate 70near Zanesville.

The crash happened near mile marker 147 along I-70 east in Muskingum County, shortly after 1p.m., 10TV's Tanisha Mallett reported.

Five people riding in a Chevrolet Cavalier that struck a Dodge minivan have died from theirinjuries, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Chevrolet, Tiffany L. Irwin, 23, and passengers; her daughter, Ava Nessline, 7months-old and son, Dallas G. Wickham, 3, all of Zanesville; mother, Maria M. Barnhill, 41, ofColumbus; and uncle, Scott T. Skeens, 39, of Philo, were pronounced dead at the scene, the patrolsaid.

The driver of the Dodge, Anna Geist, 39, of Waldorf, Md. was transported to Grant MedicalCenter. Her child passenger was uninjured.

The initial investigation indicated that the car traveling in the westbound lanes crossedthe median and struck a minivan traveling eastbound head-on, troopers said.

Patrol Sgt. Max Norris said it was raining heavily when the car crossed the median.

"It was raining out at the time, for some reason, the vehicle lost control," Norris said. "As itcame through the median, it entered on the eastbound side where it was struck by a minivan that wastraveling eastbound."

I-70 eastbound was closed from the Brownsville Road exit in Licking County for aboutfour hours during the investigation.
