A pedestrian was killed Friday when he was struck by an SUV on the city's west side.
Ralph Wellman was crossing West Broad Street, near Sylvan Avenue, when an SUV struck him,10TV's Kevin Landers reported.
"He was crossing the street while the traffic light was green, it was not red, but a speeder ina gray (SUV) struck him and he was speeding, he didn't stop," said Tommy McClendon, who witnessedthe crash.
Wellman, 32, was killed instantly.
Witnesses said the SUV was speeding when it struck Wellman. Police speculate that the COTA buswas stopped when Wellman was struck by the SUV and thrown against the back of the bus, Landersreported. Police have yet to confirm the exact cause of the crash.
The driver of the SUV was also killed.
Several people who were on the bus suffered minor injuries.
Samantha Irwin, Wellman's girlfriend, said she talked to him about 30 minutes before the crash.She told The Columbus Dispatch that Wellman was going to a meeting.
"I'd like for him to be remembered as a good father, a good man and a hard-working man," Irwinsaid.
The crash remained under investigation.
