WBNS-TV is the most-watched news channel in the heart of Ohio, delivering 24-hour news, CBSprogramming and sports, top-rated syndicated programs and award-winning local programming.

10TV News HD has led the Columbus television market in ratings more often than any other stationin the past 50 years. Advertisers benefit from WBNS-10TV's leadership role in the market andimpressive coverage area of nearly 30 Ohio counties.

WBNS-TV stands on the cutting edge of television broadcasting as it has since its inception over50 years ago. Today, high-definition television (HDTV) is the way of the future and WBNS-TV isamong the handful of television stations in the U.S. that can and does air programs in thisbreakthrough technology.

Milestones

The Wolfe family, owners of The Columbus Dispatch and WBNS radio, sought a television broadcastlicense after World War II. The call letters -- from the radio station and derived from the Wolfefamily businesses -- banks, newspapers and shoes were approved for Channel 10 in the Columbus, Ohiomarket.

Notable personalities who had their beginnings at WBNS-TV include legendary comedian JonathanWinters and "Twilight Zone" host Rod Serling.

Ohio's first African-American television personality and famous for his role as Mr. Tree, Piere,and other characters on Luci's Toy Shop, Chuck White.

Dana Tyler, now a news anchor at WCBS-TV, CBS' flagship station in New York City, started as aWBNS reporter in 1981.

Columbus Zoo director emeritus Jack Hanna started his television career with "Hanna's Ark" on10TV. 

Bob Orr, a CBS News senior correspondent based in Washington, D.C., is a former 10TV anchor andwas the only journalist allowed by prisoners inside the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility inLucasville, during 1993's riots.

The Dispatch Broadcast Group established the Ohio News Network as an independent 24-hour cablenews service in 1993. Currently, with 80 employees, ONN is available to nearly 1.5 million homes inthroughout Ohio.

WBNS-10TV continues to be central Ohio's news leader with the most advanced news-gathering toolin the region. Chopper 10 is a state-of-the-art Bell 407 helicopter with an ultra-sensitive FLIRcamera. The "steady-cam" photographs better, with less light and offer crisper pictures than itspredecessors.

WBNS-DT10's first live HDTV broadcast took place Sept. 5, 1998, as the Ohio State football teamtook on the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown, W.Va.  The ground-breaking broadcastbrought central Ohio's greatest passion, the Buckeyes, home with color, sound, and picture qualitynever seen before.
