COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Peanut Shoppe, a staple in downtown Columbus since 1936, will soon be moving a block down the street after a change in ownership.
Pat and Mike Stone have been the owners of the Peanut Shoppe since 1996 and recently sold the business to another couple. Their lease at the East State Street location is up in August.
The couple said they had a choice of moving, closing or selling and they wanted the shop to stay in Columbus.
Pat said while it was a difficult decision, it was time to step back and let someone else run the store. She said the new owners are committed to keeping the shop open.
It will move to the corner of Broad and High streets. Visitors will be able to stop by the old spot until July 27.
According to Pat, the plan is for the new owners to open the shop at the new location in mid-September.
Visitors will still be able to see Pat at the shop for the next year or so, as she says she’ll be working part-time.
Any Peanut Shoppe gift certificates have to be redeemed on or before July 27, according to a post from the owners.
The shop sells candy, chocolate-covered treats, and, of course, plenty of peanuts.
Planters Peanuts opened the store in the heart of downtown Columbus in 1936. The notable Mr. Peanut sign out front will stay with the store as it moves to a new location.
