'30 and older': 2 Louisville bars make changes to minimum age requirements to enter

"Only for the '30 & older' crowd!"

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Two bars around downtown Louisville are changing how old you need to be to enter.

In a social media post Sunday afternoon, Joe's Palm Room announced it will only allow those who are 30 or older inside moving forward.

"Our demographic primarily consists of individuals over the age," the post explained. "We aim to please our loyal patrons and ensure their continued enjoyment at our luxurious establishment."

The Russell neighborhood bar is open from noon to midnight Tuesday through Thursday, but is open until 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. It opens at 1 p.m. on Sunday and closes at midnight.

But Joe's Palm Room isn't the only bar to make the switch to only allow crowds 30 and up on the weekends.

The Grüv, a two-story sports bar and lounge on West Market Street, announced guests must be 30 or older to enter the bar after 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. The new policy begins on Friday, Aug. 16.

"It's our duty to make sure our patrons stay safe, and they feel comfortable and in a safe environment," Dee Muldrow, co-owner of The Grüv, said. "Most of our weekend patrons are 30 and older anyway, so we try and cater to that environment and underscore that."

The downtown bar is open from 11 a.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday and stays open until 3 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Its Sunday hours are 11 a.m. to midnight.  Families are still welcome during the week, Muldrow added.

Both establishments made their announcements Sunday, the day after three people were shot - two fatally - near several bars in the Highlands. The owner of the Grüv said this change was "a long time coming" and not a reaction to the shooting.
