COLUMBUS, Ohio — Big Lots is planning to close up to 315 stores, some of which are in Ohio, according to a late July filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

On July 31, the Columbus-based retailer requested to increase their number of potential closings from 150 to 315 to "aggressively address underperforming stores." Big Lots, in a previous SEC filing in June, said it was seeking to close only 35 to 40 stores.

There are eight stores in Ohio that are set to close, according to the chain's website:

  • 11372 Princeton Pike Cincinnati, Ohio 45246
  • 9690 Colerain Ave Cincinnati, Ohio 45251
  • 359 Miamisburg Centerville Rd Dayton, Ohio 45459
  • 1520 N Clinton St Defiance, Ohio 43512
  • 1170 Indiana Ave Saint Marys, Ohio 45885
  • 410 E Perkins Ave Sandusky, Ohio 44870
  • 4925 Jackman Rd Toledo, Ohio 43613
  • 7779 Tylersville Rd West Chester, Ohio 45069

The anticipated closings come as Big Lots reported a net loss of $205 million in the quarter ending May 4, 2024.

President and CEO Bruce Thorn stated that the company's sales had taken a hit "due largely to a continued pullback in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly in high ticket discretionary items."

Most of the store closures appear to be in California, Florida, Washington and Arizona. Big Lots operates 1,389 stores nationwide.
