Big Lots announces closure of Columbus store, 45 other locations

The Columbus-based retail company added 46 more locations to the list of stores that are set to close in the near future.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Big Lots announced that it will close nearly 50 additional stores in the coming weeks, including its first Columbus store.

The Columbus-based retail company added 46 more locations to the list of stores that are set to close in the near future. One includes the store at 1451 W. 5th Ave. near Grandview Avenue.

Additionally, three more stories in Ohio are expected to shut down:

  • 1550 Coshocton Ave., Mount Vernon
  • 9880 Old US 20, Rossford
  • 4585 Eastgate Blvd., Cincinnati

The four stores join the list of others in Ohio that are also set to close.

  • 11372 Princeton Pike, Cincinnati
  • 9690 Colerain Ave., Cincinnati
  • 359 Miamisburg Centerville Rd., Dayton
  • 1520 N Clinton St., Defiance
  • 1170 Indiana Ave., Saint Marys
  • 410 E Perkins Ave., Sandusky
  • 4925 Jackman Rd., Toledo
  • 7779 Tylersville Rd., West Chester

Big Lots reported a net loss of $205 million in the quarter ending May 4, 2024. President and CEO Bruce Thorn stated that the company's sales had taken a hit "due largely to a continued pullback in consumer spending by our core customers, particularly in high ticket discretionary items."

The additional store closures come weeks after Big Lots filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company plans to sell its assets and ongoing business operations to a private equity firm.

In September, Big Lots announced it was shutting down its distribution center at 300 Phillipi Rd., leaving nearly 400 people without jobs. The closure will be completed no later than Oct. 31.
