New original play 'The Moonshine Monster' shines light on addiction and domestic violence

“The Moonshine Monster” runs Sept. 26 through Oct. 6 at the Columbus Performing Arts Center in downtown Columbus.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — A new play opening this weekend in Columbus is raising awareness around the issues of substance abuse and domestic violence.

“The Moonshine Monster” is an original work by Columbus-based actor and playwright Mark Tomsic that draws on his years of work as a social worker.

It follows the volatile relationship between a young man, his father who is a recovering alcoholic and the new romantic relationship in the father’s life.

“[Addiction] can destroy people’s lives if they don’t get help,” explained Tomsic. “It’s a bit of a cautionary tale. Yes, it’s a bit of an exaggerated play…but it doesn’t take away [from] that message being very serious.”

“The Moonshine Monster” runs Sept. 26 through Oct. 6 at the Columbus Performing Arts Center in downtown Columbus.

“It’s one of those shows that leaves you guessing,” explained Ariel Wiles, the show’s director as well as one of the actors. “You keep wanting more. You want to see what’s going to happen next. You will not expect what happens in the end. It’s a fun ride.”
