Imagine Productions performing classic musical at Columbus Performing Arts Center

The musical follows the life of Gypsy Rose Lee who struck out in the waning days of vaudeville and became a burlesque dancer.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Imagine Productions of Columbus returns to the stage this weekend with its take on the 1959 classic musical "Gypsy."

"It's about Gypsy Rose Lee who was a burlesque dancer," explained director Lauren Cold Ash. "She started in vaudeville and was in the background of everything her sister did."

The musical follows the life of Lee who struck out in the waning days of vaudeville and became a burlesque dancer. Originally on Broadway in 1959, the musical was based on Lee's memoir and features lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

"It's just crashing and epic," said Ash. "I just love the music so much. It's silly; it's poignant; it's a bit garish in a fun way, but we bring heart to it...it's really cool. I really hope people get to enjoy all aspects of the show."

Imagine Productions' Gypsy runs through Sept. 1 at the Columbus Performing Arts Center in downtown Columbus. For showtimes and ticket information, visit: https://www.imaginecolumbus.org/.
