COLUMBUS, Ohio — This National Hispanic Heritage Month, the United States will recognize and pay tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched the nation and society. The month of celebrations will start Sept. 15 and run through Oct. 15.
The month recognizes the contributions that Hispanic Americans have made to the history, culture and achievements of the country.
The first observation began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson. It was then expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover 30 days, according to the National Archives.
The theme of the month this year is "Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together."
