Green Lawn Abbey hosts 'Tales from the Crypt' open house

It takes visitors on a guided tour of the mausoleum to hear the tales as told by actors portraying the souls that have been sepulchered in the tomb.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Green Lawn Abbey is the final resting place of some of the most intriguing residents in central Ohio's history and during the Halloween season, visitors have the opportunity to hear their stories as if they were told by the spirits themselves.

"Tales from the Crypt" is the Abbey's yearly open house that takes visitors on a guided tour of the mausoleum to hear the tales as told by actors portraying the souls that have been sepulchered in the nearly 100-year-old tomb.

"We're dressed in costume and we come out and we tell our stories," explained Tim Piotrowsky, a board member with the Green Lawn Abbey Preservation Association, as well as one of the actors who portray the departed for the event. "'Tales from the Crypt' is a great way to raise awareness for the Abbey. Also, all proceeds go into restoring the Abbey."

An all-volunteer organization, the Preservation Association, is dedicated to preserving Green Lawn Abbey and raises money through events like "Tales from the Crypt" as well as a movie series held on the grounds of the mausoleum.

"The Abbey has a kind of a strange way of attracting people who want to help her," observed Robert Finnerty, actor and member of the Green Lawn Abbey Preservation Association. "It just happens."

Green Lawn Abbey's "Tales from the Crypt" will be on Oct. 25 and 26. For more information and to reserve tickets, click here.
