Columbus Children's Theatre debuts 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical' this weekend

The director said the story is all about friendship and the journey of lead character Greg as he finds himself through middle school.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Starting this weekend, Columbus Children's Theatre takes the stage with the regional premiere of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical."

"It's a privilege to be able to bring this story to life and it's neat that we get to put our own stamp on it," said director Brian Gray of the production.

According to Gray, the story is all about friendship and the journey of lead character Greg as he finds himself through middle school. The musical is based on the children's book series by Jeff Kinney.

Complimentary of his cast of young performers, Gray was impressed with the number of children who came out to audition for the show.

"You can tell that there's a lot of care throughout central Ohio school districts for theatre," said Gray. "Ultimately theatre is about telling a story and the stories that we put on stage matter. It's a huge learning experience to not just see yourself on stage and see yourself in characters, but then being able to interact with everybody to create that story and share it with the world."

Columbus Children's Theatre's production of "Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musical" runs through Aug. 18 at the Riffe Center in downtown Columbus. For more information, visit https://columbuschildrenstheatre.org/shows/.
