COLUMBUS, Ohio — Do you have an issue with nuisance Canada geese? The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife is hosting a workshop to teach homeowners and business owners how to curb conflicts.

Attendees will learn about common issues with the birds and how to mitigate the presence of Canada geese on properties. Instructors will also provide a presentation on how to manage and prevent damage caused by geese.

The workshop is being held on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 1-3 p.m. at the Wildlife District 1 Office, located at 1500 Dublin Rd. in Columbus.

In 2012 the spring population estimate of resident geese by the Division of Wildlife was 147,718 birds. But resident geese aren’t the only type in Ohio.

The Division of Wildlife says that there are migratory geese, which migrate to and from their winter breeding areas, and then resident geese, which stay in one area most of the year but may migrate short distances during periods of severe weather.

According to the Division of Wildlife, one of the keys to solving a goose problem is to make your property less attractive. Some of the ways to alleviate the nuisance are to stop all feeding immediately, stop pond aeration and eliminate fertilizing grass, allowing grass to grow, especially around ponds.

It’s important to note that Canada geese are protected under both the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act and Ohio state law. To learn more about Ohio laws and the bird’s history in Ohio, click here.
