Rich Johnston
Chief Photographer
Johnston came to 10TV in 2003 after working at WSPA-TV in Spartanburg, S.C. At WSPA, Johnston started as a photographer and became the Chief Photographer in 1998.
Johnston, who hails from Evanston, Ill., graduated from the University of Northern Iowa. He began his career as an intern at KWWL-TV in Waterloo, Iowa, as a production assistant and sports reporter. He also worked in the Des Moines bureau as a news reporter who covered the statehouse.
In 1986, he worked in Dubuque, Iowa, as a news reporter but became the station's sports anchor at 4:30 p.m. after the main sports anchor was fired earlier that afternoon.
At 10TV, Johnston was the only photographer from Ohio to cover President George W. Bush aboard Air Force One, just one week before the 2004 presidential election.
He also interviewed Jim Valvano, the head basketball coach at North Carolina State University. Johnston called the interview hilarious.
"What a great and courageous man he was," Johnston said of Valvano, who later died of cancer.
Johnston said he also once covered a story in Greenville, S.C., about a man who dressed up as a chicken-duck combination. The man had webbed feet and feathers and clucked. Johnston stood by to get people's reaction as they walked by.
Johnston is married and has three children. His two boys are into hockey, baseball and football. His daughter is a figure skater and cheerleader. In his spare time, Johnston plays hockey and enjoys fixing things around the house.
