NAGS HEAD, N.C. — An 18-year-old man from Columbus died after an apparent drowning while visiting North Carolina Wednesday afternoon, according to a spokesperson for the town of Nags Head.
According to a release from Nags Head officials, local fire and rescue teams were called to the Gull Street public beach access just after 2:50 p.m. for three swimmers in distress. Two swimmers were able to return to shore, with one being assisted by a lifeguard. They were each transported to a hospital for medical evaluation.
A Nags Head police officer deployed a drone to help locate the third swimmer and successfully located them in the water. The 18-year-old man was brought to shore by lifeguards and transported to the hospital.
The man, later identified by a spokesperson for the Town of Nags Head as Ibrahim Salam Sankoh, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
